Carter
Jones continued his strong string of performances at UCI races in the US by
taking 11th on GC at the USA Pro Challenge (USPC). The USPC is one of two UCI 2.HC stage races
in the US, putting it on par with the Amgen Tour of California as one of the
two most important races on the US racing calendar. Carter had already impressed at the Amgen
Tour of California by taking home the King of the Mountains jersey. He came into the USPC with good form after
taking 8th on GC at the UCI 2.1 Tour of Utah just two weeks earlier. In the aggressively raced first stage, he got
in a move in the last 10 km that included the prolific Peter Sagan. Not wanting to take Sagan to the line, George
Bennett and Carter made a two man move to attack the break that only got caught
within the last 800 m. On the Queen
Stage into Beaver Creek, he made the second elite selection on Bachelor's Gulch
coming over the top in 8th place, but on the decent several dropped riders got
back on. After a strong ride in the Vail
TT the next day, he moved from 14th on GC into 11th, just 1 second out of 10th
and 2 seconds out of 9th. With no more
selective stages left in the race, GC positions were essentially set until the
finish in Denver were Carter held on for an impressive 11th overall.
