taken off Metformin (diabetes medication). And for that I owe my
running/cycling coach, Nate Ayers. Without him it would have been impossible to
even maintain my fitness, much less improve it to where this was an option. And
I wasn't just on a wee bit - I was on the maximum clinical limit for Metformin!
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">My path started with dropping a ton of weight before meeting
Nate but like most, I had previously lost a ton of weight only to put it back
on. Enter Nate. I found Peaks Coaching from a fellow Peloton'er. I had just
purchased an outdoor bike 3 months before but felt like I was just doing random
workouts and didn't know how to design a proper training plan. Every training
plan I saw online required me to fit into it, I wanted one that fit into MY
life, MY plans. Nate looked at my life & goals and created a custom plan
that fit me. He/I talked on a regular basis about how I was doing, what I
wanted to do. He'd customize my plan to make sure I was always challenged but
never over training.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Within 3 months of meeting Nate, I had done *two* 100-mile
bike rides and with his encouragement, started training to do the SF half
marathon 3 months later! Alas Covid hit the week before. Despite having a
worse-than-average reaction to covid, within 90 days of recovery his training
plan had me stronger than ever before, exceeding both cycling FTP and running
CP!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I've now declared the Sept 2023 Santa Cruz half Ironman as
my bucket list target, with 2 Sprint and 2 Olympic triathlons as an appetizer.
And remember - 2 years ago I weighed 60 pounds more, couldn't bike more than 3 miles,
had never run even 2 miles. I only did my first EVER swim 2 days ago, a little
nervous, but Nate has already started giving me homework on that front.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I would like to publicly thank Nate for pushing me to
maintain/extend my fitness discipline and helping me achieve a medication free
life. He's the younger-and-almost-as-cool-as-me brother I never had."</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p>

Bill Gros, Peaks Coaching Group Elite/Master Level Coach</span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Haute Route series of organized events take place throughout
the world as essentially as a Gran Fondo conducted much like a stage race. Each
stage consists of timed sections throughout the par course and presents as very
challenging day-to-day stages. Haute Route 2022 consisted of 7 consecutive
stages from August 21</span>st<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> through August 27th.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Jay came to me in February with this event as his singular goal
for 2022. Not only to complete the event but to go there and compete. Jay
relocated to Brooklyn, New York shortly after his coaching program began, and
this certainly presented some challenges to preparing for the daily grind of
this event. Limitations included only one hour of training, four of the five
workdays with a 90minute allotment on Wednesday. Then the challenge of getting
outside, through Brooklyn, into Manhattan for Central Park loops, or across to
the east side of New Jersey on a bike-friendly pathway along the Hudson river.
It was Central Park loops for shorter sharper intensity, and along the Hudson
for the longer days of endurance work typically on Sundays. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The other challenge was climbing. Where to climb? Fortunately,
Jay's friend Nick has a car and was also training for the Haute Route. They
would travel over to Bear Mountain New York and, you guessed it, do many
repeats of Bear Mountain which is, for Jay, roughly 22-25minutes of climbing on
this 5% grade.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">We managed to get Jay to a peak CTL of 97 and on event day at 88,
which is incredible with the time limitations, and an FTP of 310. We were ready
to go! We discussed stage pacing, fueling, and recovery to reinforce everything
needed to tackle these hard days.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Hard days indeed, as 3 of the first 4 stages featured over 10,000'
of climbing and stage three was "only" 9500. Stage 5 was a 10km
uphill time trial gaining 2671' at an average of 8%. Since stage 5 was only
60minutes of riding, albeit intense, it was essentially a recovery day. Stage 6
at 11500' and Stage 7 at 7400' finished out the 7-day block.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Our conservative approach had Jay losing a bit too much time on
Stages 1 and 2 as he learned how the Gran Fondo timed section "game"
was played. We started to learn the process by Stage 3 as Jay started to feel
better and better, and stronger! as the stages went on. He managed to place 27</span>th<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> overall
in the stage 5-time trial and 16</span>th<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> in the 40-49 men's category
and despite the fatigue in the legs and the altitude, threw down a 305watt
average for the 43-minute effort. His daily placings were: 91, 62, 46, 42, 27,
34, and 41. His overall final standing was 50</span>th<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> of 302
finishers and 16</span>th<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> of the 85 male 40-49 competitors.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Jay is a very dedicated athlete with a Time Trialist phenotype
that is closer to an All-Arounder with an 1100watt 5-second sprint. He plans to
go back to the Alps next year with more resolve to finish higher in the overall
standings as well as compete in some Gran Fondo's here stateside. Since coming
back he's taken his 110CTL and pushed his FTP to....335watts and unfortunately,
we have no local events reasonably close to Brooklyn to show this off!</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Here are the results of Haute Route Alps 2022: </span><a href="https://timing4you.com/resultats/G-Live-HR-9.1/g-live.reel.html?f=../2022/HRA/HauteRouteAlps_2022.clax" style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="color: blue;">https://timing4you.com/resultats/G-Live-HR-9.1/g-live.reel.html?f=../2022/HRA/HauteRouteAlps_2022.clax</span></a></p>

the fact that Rob completed this ride as part of his personal mission to

100 MTB race, scheduled for August 13, 2022. The goal was simple – complete the race. When I
made this commitment, I had already finished the race in my mind. </p><p>On August 13, 2022, I raced and finished the Leadville 100 MTB race.</p><p>Distance – 105 miles </p><p>Elevation Gain (feet climbed) – 11,954 feet
Elapsed </p><p>(Chip) Time – 12 hours, 18 minutes
Moving Time – 11 hours, 53 minutes – 8.8 mph </p><p>Lasting Thought – Filthy, hardest thing I have ever done… </p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>The Vision and The Why</b></h3><p>I committed to this journey in late December 2021 because I had decided that life had become too
comfortable. I reasoned that “Comfort Was a Slow Death,” and that I needed to embrace a challenge
– a goal – that would make me uncomfortable. I believe that discomfort (physical and mental)
exposes us to the essence of life. That is, it is easy to make the easy choice – eating processed
food from bags and packages and not going for that training ride when it is 20 degrees. Self-prescribed discomfort leads to chaos… And then, it reveals a gradual understanding of one’s
STANDARD and establishment of one’s ETHOS; commitment to the goal and to the process (and
not just the outcome); acceptance of the hard work required; personal accountability; adaptation to
the always-increasing performance levels; the purest forms of humility and gratitude; and finally, a
new awakening that allows us to see and live our lives in completely different and exciting ways.
I am neither a competent, experienced mountain biker, nor am I a natural endurance athlete. This
challenge seemed like the perfect way to expose me to the very discomfort that I felt necessary after
the strange two-years of a global pandemic. The “WHY” of it all for me was very simple – Do
Something Big – Well. And set a positive example for my son and daughter. It is not simply
enough to do something – it must be done well.
Embracing Discomfort became my daily mantra and I stayed committed to my vision for the entire
process. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><b>Do Something Big – Well </b></p><p style="text-align: center;"><b>Through Sacrifice, Strength, Endurance, Humility, Discipline and Gratitude </b></p><p style="text-align: center;"><b>In Order to Celebrate and Thank My Family For Their Support and Love, and to Feel Their
Close Embrace as We Cross the Finish Line Together </b></p><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>The How and The Training</b></h3><p style="text-align: left;">Because I was neither an experienced mountain biker nor any sort of endurance athlete, and quickly
realizing that body weight was a friend to no one at Leadville’s 10,000+ feet of altitude, I partnered
with Peaks Coaching Group (PCG) in Bedford, VA to address training and body weight management.
Brian Freeze, a PCG elite cycling coach and Leadville veteran, has coached me since early 2022,
and right up to race day. I believe that Performance = Potential – Interference. Every training day
in preparation for the race, Brian found ways to make the most of my cycling potential, while slowly
eliminating the interference. On race day, I had accumulated tremendous fitness and brought the
highest level performance possible. Performance, and performance alone, determines the predator
in any food chain. </p><p style="text-align: left;">To address the – ah hem – body mass and composition issue that had increased substantially over
the past 2 years, I worked with Kevin Bernstein, PCG’s Chief Medical Officer and Nutritionist. I
reluctantly bought in to what-at-the-time seemed to be a preposterous amount of daily, clean
carbohydrate intake – 325 grams – and in seven months I lost nearly 35 lbs under Kevin’s close
supervision and coaching. Kevin helped me thread a difficult training needle – substantial weight
loss while gaining both strength and power. Not an easy process, and nearly impossible to do
without an experienced coach. I became the medium-sized monster I aspired to me – 197 lbs on
race day. Macros, people – count your macros</p><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>The Learning – The Race & Life
So many things were learned – these stand out: </b></h3><h4 style="text-align: left;"><b>The Race:</b></h4><p style="text-align: left;">1. Pace is Critical – Take advantage of Leadville’s flat segments; climb a measured pace </p><p style="text-align: left;">2. Walk With Purpose - Head up, eyes forward, big smile, happy heart, soulful, with a song in your head </p><p style="text-align: left;">3. Have Fun – At Leadville, Race Your Race; A Smile is Worth 5 Watts Thanks Brian Freeze</p><p style="text-align: left;">4. Perfection in Nutrition is Elusive – Practice and Get it Right (Not sure I did) </p><p style="text-align: left;">5. Ride the course – often and in advance; study it, understand it. It does not forgive. </p><p style="text-align: left;"><b>Life:</b></p><p style="text-align: left;">1. Attitude is Everything, As is Effort. These are the only things we control. Maximize here </p><p style="text-align: left;">2. Focus on the process and your performance – not just the outcome </p><p style="text-align: left;">3. Expect and look for good things – we tend to find what we are looking for Thanks Todd Brown </p><p style="text-align: left;">4. Balance Confidence With Humility – Both matter, not too much of either </p><p style="text-align: left;">5. Remember Your Why – Write it Down, Reflect here often </p><p style="text-align: left;">6. Limits Begin Where Vision Ends… Visualize success – Fight Your Doubts, Ignore Excuses </p><p style="text-align: left;">7. Big Doors Swing on Little Hinges – Lots of small, but important things, find & develop them </p><p style="text-align: left;">8. Get Strong (First) and Embrace Gratitude – This will help us do our best and honor and
respect the sacrifice and hard work that got us here! </p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>Final Thanks – Gratitude </b></h3><p style="text-align: left;">As previously mentioned, a special thanks to Hunter and the team at Peaks Coaching Group - esp.
Brian Freeze and Kevin Bernstein, for their expertise and for giving a damn about me. Thanks also
to my riding buddy, Ralph, for your time and coaching; to my strength coach and friend Jon for
helping build the armor; and to my family - especially my wife, first and always - for their patience
and for tolerating, at times, what is a very selfish pursuit. Finally, I’d like to thank my local bike shop,
Cardinal Bicycle, in Roanoke, VA, and especially master mechanic extraordinaire, Dan Lucas, for
helping me with one bad-ass build that faithfully carried me the entire distance with not one problem.
None of this is possible without this crew here. <b>I love my family!
Know my gratitude. Weakness is a choice!
