This year, the Big 5
Challenge began on the weekend of July 5th with a 75km Mountain Bike Race on
Saturday followed by a 100km Road Cycling Race on Sunday. Then,
throughout the following week, Greg Judin competed with other Big 5 competitors
at a 16km Trail Running Race, an Xterra Off-Road Duathlon (consisting of 3k
Trail Run, 23k Mountain Bike and a 7k Trail run) and finished up the challenge
with a Half Marathon running race on July 12th. Prior to the Big 5 Challenge at
the Knysna Oyster Festival, Greg Judin reminded his Peaks Coach, Karen Mackin
of his two goals (in order or importance) for this special event 1) enjoy a
nice vacation at this beautiful race venue with the family and 2) feel strong
enough to enjoy the challenging events. Beyond just feeling strong, Greg's
results were quite impressive. In the Half Marathon Greg came in 137th out of
7200 competitors! His overall placings in each of the events earned him 17th
place in an incredibly challenging field of both Pro's and strong amateur
competitors. Greg was also extremely pleased with how well he felt. He was able
to have enough energy to enjoy the in between race time with his family. He
attributes this to both his Peaks Nutritionist, Namrita O'Dea and careful
planning by Coach Karen Mackin. On a race debrief call with his coach, he was
thrilled that he just "nailed" the nutrition plan and how much it
really helped him!
