Javi Mereles, Team Montclair Bikery, finished strong
to win the Cat 3 NJ State Championship. Montclair Bikery teammates Gavin Oag,
Dave Adornato, and Peaks Coach Bill Brunner worked hard to keep the peloton
together. Solid teamwork from DNK Cycling launched race favorite John Sedlak
off the front several times but they were no match for the organization of
Montclair. DNK finally got John up the road with two others without Bikery
representation. Gavin posted himself at the front stringing out the pack and
slowly dragging the break back. With a handful of laps left the Bikery sprinter
Stephen Spiller found Coach Bill’s wheel for an escort in preparation for the
final mix. As the peloton drew closer to the break, Javi jumped to bridge the
gap as Gavin backed off at the front. In the closing lap, Javi attacked the
break just before it got absorbed and crossed the line for Gold before Stephen
took second in the field sprint to take Silver (second NJ rider). Great team
effort.
