Coached by David Ertl

Des Moines, Iowa cyclist Colan Arnold won his 50+ solo age group in the Race Across the West (RAW). RAW is the first 860 miles of the Race Across America (RAAM), which goes from Oceanside CA to Durango CO. Colan finished the race in 72 hours to finish at his goal time to win his age group. Only seven solo RAW competitors out of 19 from all age groups even completed this year’s challenging event.

Colan was a model athlete in his preparation for this event. He put in many long hours in the saddle, training not only his body but his mind for this event while tweaking his nutritional intake plans.

According to Colan, “Coach Ertl's training plans were perfectly tailored to meet the demands of an 860 mile endurance race. The training plans set goals that were a stretch, but attainable. There were times leading up to RAW that I would look at the next day's training plan and think "I'm not sure this one will be possible," or "this one is going to be a killer."  It was a great feeling and confidence builder to complete the workout and know that the initial assessment was incorrect that I could do what was being asked of me.”

Congratulations to Colan!
