PCG Athletes Nico Bell (Coach: Brig Brandt) and Gawie Combrinck (Coach: Hunter Allen) competed in the second race of the Nissan Trailseeker series, Hakka Hanna, taking 1st and 2nd. Here is Gawie's race report:
"This
weekend I was on the road again and headed to Hartebeespoort dam for the second
race of the Nissan Trailseeker series, Hakka Hanna.
It
was another freezing highveld morning with some hot racing. As we set of the
racing was on from the gun an again and everyone was eager to get going with
the 65km race.
We
had the first major climb 13km into the race that also had the king of the
mountain at the top. Ian Pinaar put in a hard attack at the bottom of the climb
and we followed, as soon as he was caught Nico Bell countered and managed to
take the king of the mountain at the top.
This
was followed by a rocky technical descend before we started the second climb. I
made the pace hard up here and lead the way on the technical descend. The rest
of the field was feeling the pressure and started making mistakes. When we got
to the bottom it was only Nico Bell, Hanco Kachelhoffer and I left. We had
opened up a good lead on the chasing group and worked well together in the flat
middle section of the race. Hanco suffered a mechanical in one of the single
tracks and it was only Nico and I left. We kept the pace up till we hit the
last climb with 15km to. Nico put in an attack and I just couldn’t respond. I
kept on chasing, but Nico steadily opened up the gap the finish to take the
win. I came in in second place just over 2 min back and was followed by Brandt
du Plessis in 3rd.
