Oct 10, 2013

Quick background in Rio:
From 2010 through 2012  I've been racing successfully in the Master B (40+ 1/2/3) category here in Rio, Brazil - along with a few M45+ 1/2/3 races in California.
For 2013 - Inspired by all the ThirstyBear Cycling Teams successes and STRAVA, I thought I would UP the challenge and race Rio's Elite (P1/2) category.
When you race a category down here you must stay in only that category all season long - unlike the U.S. where you can move around.

After making the jump - I set 3 goals…
  1. Garner enough ranking points for the 'Rio Select Team' for the UCI 2.2 Tour do Rio  (Earned enough points but Rio's cycling Federations budget came up short)
  2.  Score a Road Race podium (It took all season but finally in September at Botofogo)
  3. Focus on the State TT and go for the podium - play by play below

2013 Rio de Janeiro Elite Time Trial & Road Race State Championships Report (in pictures)

Arriving at Rio State Champ TT Event on
Saturday Oct 5 - quite a production!
Note those flags in the gail force winds!

TT Start Ramp to a windy rolling hills 7km loop - twice.
On the front wheel - went from a 1080 to an 808
to a 50mm with the archaic crosswinds!

Nice shot & kind words from Hudson (FECEIRJ Staff Photographer) who's FB comments on the photo

"Dedicação e insistência recompensadas. O "coroa" Aaron Long mostra que não está brincando e conquista o título de Campeão Estadual de Contrarrelógio Elite em Rio das Ostras/RJ, em 05/10/2013. Parabéns, Aaron! Esse não desiste nunca!"

Translation "Dedication and persistence rewarded. The "old guy" Aaron Long show us that he is not playing, conquering the Rio de Janeiro Elite Man Individual Time Trial State Championship 2013, in Rio das Ostras/RJ, 2013/oct/05. Congrats, Aaron! Seems that you guy will never surrender!"

When I saw 4 FW riders on the registration list I never thought it would end like this!   Rio Elite State Champ 2013!!  (FW leads the Elite team rankings in Brazil)

Bonus General result.  Had the fastest time on the day over all categories (96 participants) including longtime rival and friend - the Current and 3X Brazil National TT & Road Race Champion - Master B

On Sunday the Elite Road Race started with 21 on the line.  FW had 7 riders and constantly sent 2 up the road…lap after lap they beat down the peloton and in the end the first 6 over the line were FW.  Raphael Dorna and I rolled in a couple of minutes back for 7th & 8th.  Another hard but good day-

Looking Forward to 2014!!
Aaron
