Because cycling is not canceled, our PCG athletes continue training from their homes and racing as usual.
This time in the 23 km rolling circuit of "Knickerbocker" at Central Park, New York City, including three significant climbs with slopes of up to 17%, the team exceeded their expectations. The team included Marisol Tellado, Yunaika Leyva, Deborah Vega and the North American and PCG coach Sarah Wangerin.
The established strategy was followed as accorded, finishing with excellent results with Yunaika Leyva in the second place and Marisol Tellado in the third place. The strategy was established by their technical director and PCG coach Axel Santiago, taking into account the quality of the registered participants from the US, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, among others. The team began with an attack right out of the gate by Deborah Vega and then then Marisol continued with a solo attack. On the descent, Yunaika took control of the race, riding with the Guatemalan professional cyclist Gabriela Soto.
At the final Yunaika struggled to overcome Gabriela's imposing pace of over 8.0 wkg in the last 500 meters, and finished a few seconds behind with a solid second position. Marisol attacked in the last kilometer finishing in third position. For Sarah, PCG coach, it was her first team event, and was instrumental in executing the strategy, culminating in an excellent and solid 5th position.
These virtual races have been much shorter and intense that what they are used to, and they have had to make changes accordingly, including more aggressive race strategies--and some tweaking on their training.
The final positions for them were:
Yunaika - 2nd place overall, 2nd place in the KOM and 3rd in the intermediate Sprint.
Marisol - 3rd place overall, 3rd place in the KOM and 9th place in the intermediate Sprint.
Sarah - 5th place overall and 8th place in the KOM.
Deborah - 11th place overall and 8th place in the intermediate Sprint.
Congratulations for the PCG women’s cyclists and upcoming virtual races.
