Phil Eaves - Age: 38.
Ave training time per week: 10-14hrs.
Fred Whitton 112 mile Hilly Sportive - Lake District, UK
The goal for Phil was to go to his first bike event and enjoy himself with his friend. We knew he was training well based on his power numbers and profile and recent increase in FTP and being able to finally get some longer rides in after the British winter had past. As the event was very hilly with very steep climbs (ave 10-15% gradients) we knew pacing the climbs early and fuelling would be very important so he maintained and felt strong in the last 2hrs of the ride… here's his comments.
"Pretty bad ass ride with lot's of time in all power zones due to the very hilly steep climbs!
It got super hot through the ride and with a bad crash which stopped the riders from descending and the very full feed / water stations there was quite a lot of waiting. I couldn't take all the food and drink I wanted to last the entire event so had to wait to refuel when needed.
My friend and I also started late to avoid the rain and that put us behind a LOT of riders that we had to overtake.
Last hour or so I felt really strong but my mate was flagging so had to ease back with him.
Overall a fun day with some awesome training!"
