Newly
crowned South African endurance MTB champion Gawie Combrinck won again
this weekend. He won the Ashburton Investments National MTB series race in
Rooiberg. A tough race in which, along with having to race the best riders
in South Africa, Gawie had to contend with zebras, crocodiles, and rhinos all
along the course.
Gawie
commented, “It was Sandy rocky and super dusty. Felt great from the start, and
great that the Lions were all pinned up as well! The first few km I was just in
the group and as people were getting caught out by the sand and rocks, I got
away with 4 other guys up the first major climb. From there I kept the pace
going and put them under pressure on the descents. They had to chase back every
time. Up the next big climb 65km in the elastic snapped and I rode away solo
from there. Just had awesome legs today and it almost felt easy. Started
cramping a bit towards the end.”
