Charlie Johnson wins New York State Age Graded Time Trial, 65-69 Category.
Though not a New York resident, Charlie won his category but can't claim credit for the state championship. A win is a win though and he was third fastest of the men over 60.
Charlie and his wife have a home in the finger lakes region and spend their summers there to get out of the heat of Katy, Texas. This allows him the opportunity to complete in two regions during the racing season. Charlie finished 2nd in the Texas State Age Graded Championship in May. They then traveled to New York, giving Charlie a natural break and rest from training before we began the rebuild toward this particular race.
We started with about two weeks of bread-and-butter basics, endurance, tempo, force and some sweetspot. Then a four week block that consisted of building time in threshold, before switching over to more and more doses of work just above threshold as weekly TSS levels began to drop. TSS totals for this block were: 345, 587, 553, 632, 573, 320, and 465 the week of the Championship ITT which was on Sunday July 10th. Charlie's CTL was roughly 70 to start the block, built up to a modest 76, and back down to 71 with a +8TSB on the morning of the event. Perfect! I think the key to the training was maintaining his base as this block had several 2.5 to 3.5 endurance paced rides, so Charlie was either working really hard and relatively short, or just riding the bike for long blocks at strict endurance. Charlie is a master machine at getting the work done at the appropriate levels. He makes his coach look good!
Charlie competed in the event back in 2018 and he was only about 4-5 seconds slower here in 2022. His average watts between the two efforts was 295 and 289 this year. His improvements in aero and position I believe has made the difference with the incredibly close times between the events spread over four years.
Charlie is coached by Peaks Coaching Group Master/Elite coach Bill Gros of Salt Lake City, Utah. Congratulations Charlie Johnson.
