Elite PCG Coach Mark Tickner's client just finished the Ironman Vichy race in France only 4 weeks after completing Ironman Switzerland (11:01hrs)!
He finished the race in a fantastic time of 10hrs 37min 55sec. His 2nd fastest Ironman time.
Swim - 1:10hr
Bike - 5:14hr
Run - 3:59hr
Total time - 10:37:55hrs.
Chris Chelius managed this great performance even though his training had not been perfect leading up to the race with a lot of business work which meant a lot of travelling. So soon after his best time at Ironman Switzerland it was important he needed much rest and minimal training so he could recover, replenish and restore himself back to being fit and healthy before Ironman Vichy. With 4 weeks this was always going to be a tight ask, but he showed he was in great shape and finished the race strongly.
Strategy was get through the swim as comfortably as he could (he averaged 0-1 swim per week through the whole year... with only lake swimming and no swimming through winter!), and then work to his strength on the bike of pacing himself to 190-210w ave throughout the whole 112miles. He managed that perfectly with only a 6min difference between both 90km laps, 1.04 VI, 225 TSS, IF 0.66… so maybe went too easy and could have given a little more!
The marathon was simply getting through as steady as he could but focussing on nutrition and getting the calories in whilst staying hydrated was crucial in this normally very hot race. He ran through just under 4hrs for the marathon. A very strong race from start to finish.
