Peaks Coaching Group elite coach Charles Gary Hoffman
takes his first USAC national championship jersey winning the Points race at
the USAC masters national track championships July 10, 2017.
Coach Hoffman
lapped the field along with Masters world champion Larry Wolf, then took the
additional points needed to win in the final sprint. Coach Hoffman says, “its
been a long time coming and frankly I just started racing track in earnest
about 2 years ago, so I’m thrilled to make it to the top step on the podium.”
The race started off slow and so coach Hoffman launched an early attack to
speed up the pace. The winning move however came after the 2nd of 5 sprints in
the 10k race when Wolf attacked and coach Hoffman covered; duo immediately
settled into strong 1/2 lap pulls proceeding to quickly lap the field on the
333 meter track. Hoffman wanted to maintain the breakaway alliance and keep
their breakaway rhythm, so he pulled up track at his turn on turn 3 giving Wolf
the extra 2 points for sprint 3. Once contact with the pack was made, their
point totals increases by 20 each and it became a race of two. Hoffman stayed
glued on Wolf’s wheel until the final double points sprint where he gained 6
points. “ I knew I need points in the final sprint for the win so after not
being in the best position, I got out of the saddle and kicked on the final
stretch passing the 2016 World masters Points champion Patrick Gelineau for the
winning points.”
