Pele Nogueira wins Hill Climb at Syracuse Race Weekend
Pele is a junior on the Montclair Bikery Development
team. Here is his race report.
“It was 70 degrees, overcast skies made the weather
conditions ideal for a great race. My eating was smart. I had a fruit salad for
breakfast, a sandwich around 11, and a cliff bar about an hour before my race.
I warmed up for about 5 miles before the start of the race. The neutralized
start gave my warm up another 5 miles to make it 10.
My goal today was to win, not to go for a fast time up
the climb. Because of this and the length of the climb, I decided to stay with
the leading pack early on and not push it too much. It helped me feel very
relaxed early on. I moved to the front at times where I set a good tempo.
Understanding my climbing ability, the tempo was to try to ride at a relaxed,
steady pace while making the non-climbers suffer. With some help from others,
we managed to form a select group of 5 riders.
I knew I had to make my move a little ways before the
finish. I made my attack right when we made a left to into a steep gravel
section with about a mile to go. With no one on my wheel, I decided not to slow
down and push it all the way to the line. It worked and the gap opened up very
rapidly and I managed to sustain my pace all the way to the line to win.”
Pele is coached by PCG Coach Bill Brunner
